International Studies

In an increasingly complex world of multinational corporations and competition, international studies majors will be uniquely qualified to assume vital roles in business, government, and education.

The UMF International Studies Program will help you gain a solid understanding of historical and contemporary issues in international affairs and acquire the language skills and cultural and spatial sophistication essential for success in the increasingly complex world of business, government or education.  It is a collaborative effort of faculty in varied disciplines.  Many of them came to this country from abroad or studies overseas.  All of them have extensive experience in international relations.

The key to mastery of international studies is a close relationship with your two advisors.  With their help, you will select two of the following program options as your interdisciplinary international studies major:  business economics, foreign language,  geography, history, political science.  These individually tailored programs are approved by the International Studies Council by the end of your sophomore year.  You will meet with your advisors regularly to assess your progress and discuss various career and study possibilities.

Whatever choices you make, you will find there is significant foreign language component to your studies.  Knowing a foreign language will give you a competitive edge where you live and work.

UMF is fortunate to be able to offer study-abroad opportunities in well-established programs in France, England, China and Russia.  Individualized programs are also available and can be arranged in almost any country.

Student organizations such as the Cercle Francais, Geography Club, History Society, International Studies Club and Political Science Club sponsor day or weekend trips to Boston, Montreal, Quebec City and elsewhere.
