Political Science

Whether your interest lies in law school, a career in government, diplomatic or intelligence fields, involvement in political interest and lobbying groups, or pursuing graduate study for a policy or academic career, majoring in Political Science/Social Science at UMF is a good place to start.

Studying Political Science at UMF combines the study of politics and government (domestic and international) with at least three social science areas, chosen from anthropology, economics, geography, history, psychology or sociology.  It's broad-based approach provides  a strong social science foundation which challenges students to consider connections among ethics, science and socially relevant issues.

As a student you will gain an integrative understanding of how political considerations are influenced by culture, society, history, location, personality and the economy as you develop strong analytical, critical thinking and communication skills.  Small classes allow our faculty to work closely with you to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for a variety of possible career goals.  Faculty will help you design a personalized course plan to achieve these goals, and advise you on off-campus activities such as internships or study abroad opportunities to enhance your education.

You are encouraged to participate in internships, collaborate with faculty regarding research, present at national conferences, develop leadership skills, get involved in political campaigns, with with grassroots organizations, and participate in domestic and international field trips to gain hands-on experience.

The UMF Political Science Club, which has taken educational trips to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, and Hartford, provides students with networking opportunities with national and regional political leaders.

This program provides an excellent preparation for students interested in going to law school as well as graduate school.
