UMF Rugby Team Named New England Champs

University of Maine at Farmington men's rugby team was recently named the New England Division III College Rugby Champions, beating Keene State University 12-7. According to the Daily Bulldog, the handling skills of the UMF backs and the power of the forward pack was enough to lift the UMF team to victory in spite of Keene State's determination. Sustainable Sculpture Sprouts at UMF

A colossal naturalistic sculpture created from sustainable materials by renowned sculptor Christopher Fennell was recently unveiled at the entrance to University of Maine at Farmington's LEED silver certified Education Center. The sculpture's three graceful leaves are over 24 feet tall and represent Fennell's first work in Maine. International Day of Climate Awareness Observed at UMF

Carson '06 Wins $25,000 Medical School Scholarship

Tobin Carson '06, a first-year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, has been awarded a renewable $25,000 grant from the Doctors for Maine's Future Scholarship Program. She is one of only four people in Maine who qualified for the grant. UMF Receives Quimby Grant to Fund Student Research on Maine Ponds

A prestigious Quimby Family Foundation grant of $20,000 has been awarded to Julia Daly, UMF associate professor of geology, to fund student research on the effects of climate change on high elevation ponds in Maine. An outgrowth of a smaller-scale pilot study conducted by Daly, the project will concentrate on research conducted during the summer of 2010. Kevin Grover '95, a second-grade teacher at the Lunt School in Falmouth, Maine, has been named Maine's Teacher of the Year and is now in the running for the National Teacher of the Year award to be announced in spring 2010.
